Our farmers, the Awajún people, are an ancient native culture that has been living over several centuries in the Peruvian Amazon Region far from western civilization. The cocoa bean market consists of two main categories: fine or flavor, and bulk or ordinary. The main difference lying in the quality of flavor.
The world market share of fine flavor cocoa beans is about 12%, with South America representing 90% of the market . The three main producers of fine flavor cacao include Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Peru.

The history, domestication and earlyuses of cacao are somewhat limited. It is believed to have been first domesticated in Mesoamerica. However genomic research shows that the origin and greatest diversity lies in the upper Amazon region specific to NW South America, dating since approximately 5,300 years ago.
The Marañón basin is the 7th largest within the Amazon region, with an area that comprises 358,000 km2. There is a great quantity of flora and fauna species that are endemic to this region due to its relative seclusion.

The search for the roots of cacao allowed the famous Spanish Chef Jordi Roca to get in touch with our native communities of the Awajun ethnic group, since their plots produce one of the most special fine-flavor beans that can be found.
